Katia Vastiau

Hi, I’m Katia and I’m a swimmer. I’m also a little bit into a lot of other things and have a tendency to say “yes” to any good adventure or challenge, especially if they involve water or the outdoors …

I always liked water but only learned to swim aged 10, and found myself training with my local swimming club straight after. By aged 14, I joined a large club in Brussels and went on to swim for Belgium between 1987 and 1990.

Main events:  50-100-200 breaststroke and 400 medley.

After damaging my knee, then starting university, I hung up my googles for nearly 20 years…and I’m still not sure how I managed that!  I got back into swimming about 5 years ago, discovered open-water swimming and haven’t looked back since.

I love the mix of people and abilities OW brings together, the camaraderie, the fun, the wonderful places to discover and the amazing feeling you get out in the water! I’m very lucky to live 5min away from the Thames and Queenford Lakes and I’ve had the chance to do some lovely other swims over the years.

Biggest challenges: probably Windermere 1way and the Gibraltar Straight.
Prettiest swims: Montenegro, Finland, Wast water.

I like to swim alone but I love to swim with friends, I like swimming fast and I like swimming to explore, and I like to make a positive impact on the environment I swim in.  I also love to help people discover open-water swimming .

This season, I decided my swims would be about location and fun, or challenging swims for good, and they include: The Big Chill Swim in Windermere, The Scilly Challenge and the O2H 50mile Swim for Chiltern House, all exciting in their own way! And I hope to do and encourage a few river clean-ups too!
